Learning to fly is not hard - you get to fly the plane on your first lesson.  It's not cheap either, but it is worth it!
More info on learning to fly right here in Wellington can be found here.
For a bit of entertainment, try out the 737 simulator in Courtaney Place - it's flight deck is exactly the same as the real thing.
For a very high specification Flight Simulator for you PC, try X Plane ( it's used for commercial training and it runs on Mac, Windows, or Linux).
A good Joystick to use is the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.

First flying lesson in a Piper Tomahawk

Using X Plane to land a 737-800 at Wellington Airport on Runway 34.
Actual weather conditions for the day simulated as well - hence a bumpy ride in.  To simulate this yourself:
Airport:  NZWN, DME  112.3MHz
If approaching Runway 16 (from the north), LOC and Glide Slope 110.3MHz
If approaching Runway 34 (from the south), LOC and Glide Slope 109.9MHz
Dan's friends and flatmates (Ben, Sam, Mikal) got him an Introductory flying lesson for his birthday. Originally, he was going to be flying a Piper Tomahawk, but the instructor decided to take the 4 seater Cessna 172, which meant we could come along for the ride too.
